Microsoft Partners With Enterprise Carbon Accounting Software (ECA) Package Sofware Vendor

The Markey-Waxman bill on carbon emissions cap-and trade making its way through the Senate, will require a lot of accounting and tracking for US corporations. There is a good article at the CNBC website covering this new field of enterprise carbon accounting software (ECA) packages.

Microsoft is partnering with a San Francisco start-up called CSWare. CSWare is mentioned in the CNBC article and has recently landed some marqui clients this year. Apparently Reducing carbon emissions becomes a byproduct of using their system instead of the primary goal says founder, Karen Alonardo,“I personally don’t think carbon is separate.”

There is an excellent post about CSWare at the Microsoft Startup Zone blog. CSWare in involved in Microsoft® BizSpark™, a global program designed to help accelerate the success of early stage startups by providing key resources when they need it the most.

There is another good article on CNN's Site about Microsoft's Project Two Degrees and its other Green Accounting initiatives.

Whether or not the Markey-Waxman bill passes in its current may be irrelevant. As companies like Wal-Mart announce green labeling initiatives and ask vendors to track their carbon foot prints businesses large and small may find they need the capability to account for how thier products affect the environment.
